National Knowledge Network paves the way for India’s higher education networks to be interlinked. (India-Maldives Pact)

S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India signed a pact on education and health, during his visit to the Maldives. The India-Maldives partnership has witnessed and combated the anguish of the pandemic. Still, a fast-paced progress relationship can be witnessed between India and Maldives.

S Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, and Abdulla Shahid, the Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, signed an agreement on March 26, 2022, acknowledging progress in the fields of capacity building and training. The agreement paves the way for connectivity between the Maldives’ Higher Education Network and India’s National Knowledge Network.

The Pact

The National Knowledge Network (NKN) is a multi-gigabit national research and education network with the goal of providing a unified high-speed network backbone for India’s educational and research institutions. According to a PTI report, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) is in charge of the network.

According to the agreement, India’s National Knowledge Network will connect 1500 Indian institutes, universities, and learning centers in Singapore, Europe, and the United States to the Maldives. This initiative will definitely transform the lives of people in a good way like never before. It would eventually tackle common challenges of regional development, resulting in strengthening and progress of both countries.

The National Knowledge Network (NKN)

In March 2010 the establishment of the National Knowledge Park was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure, at an outlay of INR 5990 Crore, to be implemented by NIC for over a decade. The National Knowledge Network (NKN) initiative aims to build a strong and resilient Indian network that can provide a secure and reliable connection.

Its goal is to connect all research institutions, universities, laboratories, libraries, and agricultural and healthcare institutions and facilitate the flow of knowledge and information. It would surely bring a knowledge revolution that will transform society and promote growth.

Features of NKN :

● Setting up high-speed backbone connectivity that will facilitate information and knowledge sharing.
● Facilitating collaborative research, innovation, and development.
● Enabling advanced distance education is highly demanded in fields like science, medicine, and engineering.
● Accelerating an ultra-high-speed foundation for e-governance.
● Enabling integration of several sectoral networks in the fields of education, health, commerce, research, and governance.
● Connectivity to global networks to associate with the research communities around the world.

It is undoubtedly a significant step that will enable students, researchers, and scientists around the world to work together for the advancement of human development is a crucial and emerging area.
